 When finalizing the purchase of a home, it is important for the new owners to contact the utilities department and other essential service providers to ensure a seamless transition. This includes setting up accounts for electricity, water, gas, internet, and any other necessary utilities. By proactively notifying these agencies, homeowners can avoid any interruptions in service and ensure that their new home is fully equipped and ready for occupancy. Remember to have all relevant account information on hand when making these calls to facilitate a smooth process.  

All utility accounts should be transferred after the closing. We recommend the Seller call the gas and electric companies to request a final reading. The Purchaser should contact the gas & electric companies to have the service put into their name.

WATER
It is the Seller's responsibility to obtain a final water bill. If applicable, please see the Water Escrow Agreement. We recommend the buyer call water department to give them your name and make sure final read was completed.

PROPERTY TAXES
Please remember to file your Property Transfer Affidavit, Principal Residence Exemption Affidavit and your Request to Rescind Principal Residence Exemption forms. Also, please notify the proper taxing authority in your municipality of the change in ownership.

DRIVER'S LICENSE
Please contact your local Secretary of State Office. If you are relocating from out of state, be sure to change your driver's license within thirty (30) days. Visit www.michigan.gov/sos/

VOTERS REGISTRATION
If you move from one community to another you must re-register with the appropriate City Clerk or at www.michigan.gov/sos/

DOOR LOCKS
It is recommended that the new owners change the locks on all outside doors and sheds.

SMART HOME CONTROLS
Be sure to disconnect your smart home from all personal controlling devices.
